M.C Escher is my favorite artist. He was a graphic designer and created lithograph prints out of wood. He deeply studied art, mathematics, and crystal formation to toy with the viewer’s perception. He was prolific and never sold a piece. These image were taken at the ‘Virtual Realities: The Art of M.C. Escher from the Michael S. Sachs Collection’, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston 2022.
Kusama
DMA, 2018NY Botanical GardensDancing Pumpkin, 2020Yayoi Kusama’s story is what is most fascinating to me. She is a Japanese artist who moved to New York City in 1958. She faced a notable amount of misogyny during that time trying to establish herself as an artist. She is famous for her hallmark polkadots and has been an open advocate of mental health sharing her own issues. I saw her exhibition ‘All the Eternal Love I Have for Pumpkins’, 2018at the Dallas Museum of Art and ‘Kusam: Cosmic Nature’ at the New York Botanical in 2021.
Warhol
Last Supper Marfa, TexasAndy was the earliest fascination that I recall having for an artist thanks to Nick Rhodes’ friendship with him in the 80’s. I always wanted to be a part of the Factory and he shared my love of Polaroids and modernism. I have probably studied the most about Andy including online courses by the Warhol museum. I have seen his work in various places, but ‘From A to B and Back Again’ at the Whitney Museum in NYC, 2018 was the most extensive I have witnessed.
Dior
DMA 2018Next to Alexander McQueen, Dior is my favorite fashion house (I mean–John Galliano!!!). I was lucky enough to see a Dior exhibit twice, ‘From Paris to the World’ in 2019 at the Dallas Museum of Art and then ‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams’ in 2021 at the Brooklyn Museum.
Bertoia
Harry Bertoia is my favorite sculpture artist, probably because he was keen aware of sound of his metal sculptures and a jewelry maker . He was also a furniture designer. I saw ‘ Harry Bertoia Sculpting Mid-Century Modern Life, at the Nasher in 2022 and was able to see one of the first public performance using his sounding sculptures.
